GM to Pause Factory Zero EV Production in Detroit Through Early October

GM to Lay Off 360 Workers at Detroit EV Plant in September Amid Output Cuts
Detroit, MI – General Motors will temporarily scale back production at its Factory Zero electric vehicle plant in Detroit-Hamtramck, beginning September 2 and running until October 6, the company informed employees in a recent memo.

The adjustment affects first- and second-shift operations, putting assembly of the GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Escalade IQ on hold. About 360 workers are expected to be placed on temporary layoff status, with eligibility for subpay and benefits under the GM-UAW national agreement, according to the automaker.

GM said the decision is part of routine efforts to balance vehicle supply with market demand. “Factory Zero is making temporary adjustments to production to align with market dynamics,” spokesperson Kevin Kelly explained in an emailed statement.

This isn’t the first cutback at Factory Zero in 2024. Back in April, GM reduced output and eliminated roughly 200 jobs at the facility, citing slower-than-anticipated demand for its lineup of electric trucks, including the GMC Hummer EV pickup and SUV, Chevrolet Silverado EV, Sierra EV, and Cadillac Escalade IQ. The latest changes bring an additional 160 employees into the layoff pool.

In total, the Detroit-Hamtramck plant employs around 4,000 workers. Operations are scheduled to resume after October 6, following the temporary shutdown.
